When he hears that Sol has returned to full brightness, his relief is not chiefly because the people of Earth will survive, but because his own life was not taken completely out of his control without purpose. An impressive story about a one-man mission to save the Earth from extinction. Between the betrayal of Stratt, the deaths of his crewmates and other friends he made on the project, the ~30 years of time passed since he left, and the extensive hospitality of the Eridians, I think "What happened on Earth?" mostly isn't addressed in the book because Ryland no longer thinks of it as home. ![]() (view spoiler) [He kind of answers it in a qualitative sense: things didn't get so bad that they lost the technology/expertise/will to collect the Beatles from outer space and take the Taumoeba to Venus.īut I think part of the point of the story was that Ryland developed such a close relationship with Rocky ("my only friend", I think he says at one point?) that he's far more concerned about getting his friend home and then enjoying his company and learning about his culture than he is about whatever has happened on earth in the time he was gone, or what will happen there in the future. ![]()
